Haematuria can be caused by various reasons including infection, injuries, or urinary stones. Haematuria is also a common symptom of bladder cancer. Therefore, early testing is critical as early, coordinated care can make all the difference.

The Haematuria Clinic is part of an Allevia Health Journey and was developed in partnership with Allevia Health and Urology Institute specialists from OneSixOne Medical Group. It is a dedicated diagnostic service designed to identify the cause of haematuria.

The haematuria journey step-by-step

The process begins with your GP, who confirms the presence of blood in the urine (haematuria).

Your GP refers you to the Haematuria Clinic for further investigation.

3. CT scan

A CT scan is arranged at Allevia Radiology to inspect the bladder.

4. Further testing – flexible cystoscopy

You are then booked for a flexible cystoscopy at OneSixOne, where the urologist examines your bladder.

5. First consultation with urologist

On the same day as your cystoscopy, you will meet with the urologist to discuss the findings.

6. Treatment

If treatment is required, specialists will review your results and talk you through the appropriate options.

7. Referral to the Bladder Cancer Clinic

If bladder cancer is detected, your care transitions smoothly to the Bladder Cancer Clinic for ongoing management.

Our Haematuria Clinic urologists are Southern Cross Affiliated Providers and nib First Choice providers. 

If you’re insured with Southern Cross or nib, OneSixOne or Allevia Radiology can help arrange prior approval for your appointments and any required tests and procedures. Once your referral is received, the Haematuria Clinic team will contact you to talk through the next steps.

If you’re with another insurance provider, please check to confirm what’s covered. OneSixOne will provide a quote before your appointment, which then needs to be submitted to the insurer for approval.

How long will it take to get a diagnosis?

The Haematuria Clinic, led by Urology Institute specialists, provides rapid access to essential tests and appointments. Most patients receive a diagnosis within one week of referral.

What tests will be performed at the Haematuria Clinic?

Your assessment begins with a CT scan at Allevia Radiology. After the scan, you will undergo a flexible cystoscopy at OneSixOne, which is a minor procedure performed in a clinic setting. On the same day as your cystoscopy, the urologist will discuss your results with you.

Do I need a referral?

Yes. Patients can be referred to The Haematuria Clinic by their GP once blood in the urine is confirmed – either visible haematuria or microscopic haematuria identified through laboratory testing.
